Nearly all #1 qualifiers
fall in first round
Except for the Pro Stock Motorcycle
category, all of the other professional category drivers
holding #1 qualifying positions on race day found
themselves out of eliminations following the first round
of eliminations. Von Smith's face-off with 20-year
old Zach Barklage in the first round was no exception.
The RAGE Mustang GT spun the tires immediately off the
starting line and Von could only watch as his opponent
took the win with a respectable 6.257 at 232.27 mph.
Al Billes defeated Barklage in the second round and went
on to take the event win for the third time in 2004.
Teams prepare for the next AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod
Challenge next weekend in Madison, IL.
Von Smith enters Sunday
eliminations in top spot
Von Smith enters eliminations on Sunday
morning with his first NHRA pole position of the
season. The team's Friday night qualifying effort of
6.229 seconds was good enough to hold on to the top spot
through Saturday qualifying and gives Von in the #1 spot
for eliminations on a crisp, cool Father's Day morning.
Von will face off with Zach Barklage in the first round.
